Plates

Still registered abroad

A car on foreign plates can be sold, but the buyer needs to understand the paperwork. Send us the registration document.

UK reg

Registering here

To register in the UK, imported cars usually need NOVA notification and, for some, approval. Tell us how far you have got.

Time

How long it has been here

Rules limit how long UK residents can use a foreign-registered car here. Check GOV.UK and tell us the dates.

Lights

Headlamps and speedo

For MOT and UK registration, headlight beam pattern matters. Tell us if they have been changed.

Finance

Loans taken out abroad

If there is finance with a foreign lender, tell us. It needs settling before a sale.

Proof

Showing it is yours

We need proof the car is yours, such as the foreign registration certificate.

Your checklist

  • UK V5C or the foreign registration document
  • Photo ID: passport or driving licence
  • All keys
  • Purchase invoice or proof of ownership
  • Any import or NOVA paperwork
  • Details of any finance

This page is general guidance about selling a LHD car. It isn't a price guide: every vehicle is valued individually, free and without obligation.
